BATTLING HYDROCEPHALUS IN EASTERN EUROPE
Since 2004 Humanitas has successfully provided urgent, life-saving support to children throughout Romania suffering from the debilitating medical condition known as Hydrocephalus.
Hydrocephalus is commonly referred to as ‘water on brain’. It is an excessive amount of fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. If untreated, it can hinder the development of the brain, which in turn leads to a rapid decline into immobility, and eventually death.
Whilst many children treated for Hydrocephalus are able to lead normal lives, children in poverty-stricken areas are not so fortunate. Humanitas provides the medical equipment and long-term support these individuals have lacked, transforming their lives.

PROJECT AFRICA – TREATING HYDROCEPHALUS IN GHANA
Following our ongoing success combating Hydrocephalus in Romania, in 2014 we expanded our support to Africa.
Thousands of children urgently need our help here.
Ghana suffers from a severe lack of access to the vital neurosurgical support required to treat the illness. The result is significant disability amongst the population and many unnecessary deaths.
There is currently only one neurosurgeon for every 10 million of the population in Africa.
Doctor Abas Adam, Head of Neurosurgery in Tamale Ghana, adds:
“We lose a great number of children to Hydrocephalus, even though the condition is highly treatable. This is mainly due to a lack of proper equipment in our hospital but also because parents are often unable to cover the costs of surgical treatment.”
With your support we are taking action to solve this problem.
We send volunteer medical experts to Ghana’s main hospitals, supplying the much needed equipment that grants access to Hydrocephalus treatment for thousands of the regions poorest patients.
We provide surgical training for local doctors in these hospitals, extending the scope for treatment and the potential for saving lives.
